It is now well and truly the season of good will and frosty winds, which makes it the perfect opportunity for staying in and doing a spot of festive baking. When we decided to use Italy as the destination for December’s Sunvil Supper Club there was only one recipe that we could really go for: Panettone.

Whilst there are many stories about this Christmas treat’s origins – something similar was known to be around in Roman times, it appears in an early 16th century painting and is believed to be mentioned in a book by the Pope’s personal chef in the mid 16th century – the one thing they all have in common is that it originated in Milan.

Whatever its origins this sweetbread, filled with raisins and citrus peels is now a quintessential feature of Christmas for many across Italy and has been spreading rapidly across Europe and the rest of the world. So much so that it is now estimated to be worth about 600 million Euros to the Italian economy.
